Exploring Attached Hot Tubs

Many people are interested in getting a hot tub for their pool. They can imagine it being summer and waiting for it to get darker and cooler as night arrives and then leaning back in their own hot tub. They can imagine listening to the soft sound of the water from the hot tub flowing into the main pool and letting the warm water soothe their tired muscles.

Half of the pools we install feature hot tubs. We at BGI Pools like creating pools with hot tubs because we like our projects to have utility—it’s why we care that they’re simple and energy-efficient. Wanting utility means we want your pool to be useful in multiple ways. A hot tub allows different people to use the same pool in different ways at the same time. For example, mom can relax in the hot tub while dad plays with the kids in the main pool. Or, one member of a couple can swim laps while the other kicks back in the tub.

Why Get an Attached Hot Tub?

Hot tubs can be either attached to a residential pool or separate. At BGI Pools, we like attached hot tubs for a couple of reasons. The first reason is about equipment and simplicity. Attaching a hot tub is easier mechanically than creating a separate hot tub. If the hot tub is connected to the pool, you can use the pool equipment to service the hot tub. A separate hot tub will require its own equipment. We don’t want out clients to have to get two sets of equipment, so we like the attached option.

The next reason is also related to simplicity. Say you relax in your hot tub twice a week—all the other many hours of the week, the tub isn’t in use. With an attached hot tub, when the hot tub is not in use (aka most of the time), the water from the pool helps regulate the chemistry of the hot tub. Since you have a single system, you have fewer things to fix and to buy. This is more energy-efficient.

Our final reason is about aesthetics. If the hot tub is attached to a pool and is raised, we can create an aesthetically-appealing water feature. As the water overflows the hot tub, it makes a little waterfall into the pool. Humans are drawn to look at movement and we at BGI Pools like the sight of the water flowing over the edge and into the pool—it’s peaceful, like watching water in a stream. While we think all pools are beautiful, water features make pools extra-pleasant to look at. Additionally, we can add visual pop to attached hot tubs by covering their exteriors in stone. For example, we can create a stacked-stone look with travertine.

Overall, attached hot tubs require a smaller amount of equipment, are more energy-efficient, and are more visually-appealing than separate hot tubs.

How Do Our Hot Tubs Work?

Earlier we mentioned hot tubs being in use or not in use. If you thought that this implies you have to turn them off and on, you’d be right. Our hot tubs are warmed by a gas heater that takes thirty minutes to heat up. Say it’s after dinner on a lazy Saturday night and you’re thinking of taking a dip in the hot tub. You’d turn on the heater and get your swim suit on and after thirty minutes, the tub would be an ideal temperature for kicking back and relaxing.
