Customizable Pool Decks

A backyard pool doesn’t just offer relaxation in the water, all the backyard pools we build also have a concrete deck that you can relax and entertain on. Imagine that you’ve finished playing catch with your kids in the water. Now you can get out and lean back in a lounge chair, reading and taking sips of a cool lemonade. Or perhaps you’ve invited your friends over. You and your guests sit at tables around the pool and near the fire pit. You enjoy the cool weather and talk to your friends about their lives while dining on hors d’oeuvres.

Creating a Pool Deck That Fits Your Needs

Different people will want to use their pool deck for different activities and we customize each pool deck to fit how the customer plans to use the space. Our general rule is: don’t pour more pool deck than you’re going to use. There is a certain size deck needed for a customer who only wants sun chairs on the deck. There’s another size needed for a customer who’s thinking of doing poolside entertaining and needs the space for a fire pit and two tables with umbrella stands. Sometimes customers will even want an outdoor kitchen or barbecue on their pool deck.

We have a lot of flexibility. We just generally follow the rule of not crowding the pool too close the house and keeping most outdoor furniture on the side of the pool near the house. (People tend to stay on that side of the pool, generally only using the far side when they have guests over.)

Creating a Pool Deck With the Look You Want

All the pool decks we create are made of decorative stamped concrete, almost all made to look like flagstone. Flagstone is a type of stone with fractured texture and with the help of stamps and coloring, our concrete will look like this type of stone.

In terms of specific texture, our flagstone-patterned concrete can be made to look and feel coarse-grained or fine-grained. Coarse-grained has a “chunky” texture while fine-grained is smoother.

We can also create pool decks in different colors. We use Increte for our pool decks and Increte products come in a range of colors. Perhaps you want your deck to be a cool tone to compliment the dim twilight light as you sit with your neighbors in the evening—we could make your concrete flagstones Philly Blue. Or maybe you’re looking for a warmer look to match the brick of your house? In that case, we can make your deck Brick Red.

Finally, the shape of your pool deck will be determined by the customizable shape of your pool. If you choose to have a kidney-shaped pool, your deck will be kidney shaped and the same goes if your pool is a typical rectangle.

How Do We Create Pool Decks?

Our pool decks take about a week to install and are put in after we’ve dealt with the pool itself (digging for the pool, installing the shell, plastering, and putting in water-lined tile). Then it comes time to pour the deck. The first step is putting down the rebar grid. We want the rebar to be in the middle of the concrete, so we either put it up on boosters or manually pull the rebar upwards after we’ve poured the concrete.

Because BGI Pools is invested in creating a durable product, we add fibermesh into our concrete before we’ve poured it. Basically, this is fiberglass fibers that we mix into the concrete while it’s still wet and the addition of these fibers will make the concrete stronger. Fibermesh is often used instead of rebar, but we use both fibermesh and rebar for maximum strength and longevity. The combination of fibermesh and rebar will make your pool deck last longer without large cracks forming. For example, our owner installed a concrete pool deck at his house and it lasted 16 years before needing to be resealed and after being resealed, it was nearly as good as new.

After we put down rebar and mix in fibermesh to the concrete, we can pour out your concrete pool deck.

In Summary

Our concrete pool decks are customizable and durable. Maybe a couple wants to host all their neighbors for barbeques and wants their deck and pool shape to have a unique visual appearance. For instance, we could build them a kidney-shaped pool and pool deck and make the concrete of the pool deck in a coarse-grained flagstone pattern in the dusty purple color of Sedona. The deck would be large enough for several tables, chairs, and umbrellas, along with a grill. Or maybe a couple wants something simple and needs just enough space to relax by the pool. We could build them a small, rectangular-shaped pool and pool deck with a flagstone pattern in Soft Gray with enough space for two sun chairs. No matter what customizations you want, your concrete pool deck will last for a long time!
